Illustrator Breakout Session
This year the illustrator’s break-out session "Pick Me! Pick Me! Promoting Your Illustration—Get Noticed and Get the Job!" will include a homework assignment. Art Director, Lucy Cummins is providing two prompts which will be emailed to illustrators following registration. Illustrators will have until February 18th to e-mail the initial sketches to the Illustrator Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org. Ms. Cummins will provide feedback on the sketches, and participants will have until the day of the conference to revise and improve their work accordingly. Final, full-color pieces will be brought to the conference break-out session where Lucy will provide feedback on everyone’s pieces. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn what it is like working with an art director, and everyone will benefit from hearing the group-wide feedback.
The Portfolio Display will be held April 13th from 8:30am-2:55pm. Drop-off will be from 7:30am-8:20am. Pick-up will be by 3:00pm sharp. Prizes for the winners will be awarded at the end of the conference day.
The portfolio can be leather or vinyl with page sizes from 8”x10”-11”x14.” It should be able to lie flat on the display table, and be no bigger than 17” x 26” when opened. It should contain no more than 10-15 representational pieces of your BEST artwork and any dummies or sketchbooks that you may wish to show. If you are bringing a book dummy, remember to attach it somehow to your portfolio. Any promotional hand-outs/art samples will be placed alongside the artist’s portfolio. Please, no boxes or fancy/three dimensional set ups at this time.
Remember NO ORIGINAL ARTWORK should be included in your portfolio. Have high-quality color copies of your art in your portfolio instead. Please label all artwork as well as the portfolio case.
You must be enrolled in the conference to participate, but you do not need to be an SCBWI member. No fee is required to participate, although participation must be confirmed. Email the Illustrator Coordinator at email@example.com for confirmation in the portfolio display contest.
Do NOT send your portfolio in advance; bring it to the conference. You will receive your critique time at morning registration. Further instructions regarding portfolio critiques and portfolio contest will be emailed to you by the Illustrator Coordinator.
A picture book dummy is a mock-up of the standard 32-page picture book. Your critique will involve assessment of both words and pictures. You need to study picture book layout (self-ended/colored-ends), and have enough art for 12-14 double page spreads, which will be in black and white. Choose two spreads in the dummy to fully color and take to completion so that the reader has an idea of how the finished product will look. Text should be either digitally placed into the art or glued onto the page. Be sure your name and contact information are placed somewhere on the book, preferably on the back cover. Scan each page of the dummy, including your name and contact information and create a PDF file. Email the PDF to firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, February 11, 2013.
Bring the dummy to your critique at the conference.
If you need help to create this file, email Diandra Mae at email@example.com.
